I once interviewed a Sales Rep for my business and when I asked him if he believed in the product he stared at me blankly. “What product? I can sell anything.” I was not surprised, reading his CV that he had been jumping from one sales job to the next. After a lot of questioning he admited that he was looking for that “one killer product” but couldn’t find it. His sales were dismal.
His core problem, it turned out, was that he didn’t care whether he believed in his product or not. He hadn’t gone to study other successful sales people. For him it was all about the numbers. Numbers are important, to be sure. But you also need to believe in what you sell.
I simply won’t sell anything unless I believe in it. Neither should you. Plain and Simple. If you’re selling something you don’t believe in, get out now! Before you not only lose the Game of Sales, but your reputation too.
Before you even start selling your product, you need to evaluate it. Believe in it 100%. Know that your product will change the lives of those who buy it for good. Know that they are better off.
If you don’t believe that – find something you do believe in. It’s as simple as that.

This last week has been incredibly interesting to me. My life seems to come in “bursts” … lots of lulls and then BAM! A life lesson happens.
On Friday I attended the Robert Kiyosaki Breakfast in Cape Town. It was awesome to meet the man that literally changed my life. I even got him to autograph my yellowing and well-read copy of Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
During his talk, Robert shared with us the fundamental flaw they teach us at univarsity and how it kills business. It’s called: Sales & Marketing.
For some reason we’re subconsiously taught that sales is more important than marketing. We’re taught that when things are bad, we should cut expenses and focus on Sales. Our accountants tell us that Marketing is an expense. And worse, it’s unmeasurable! Ouch.
In fact, Marketing is incredibly important. Especially now when the economy is doing as poorly. This is the opportunity to grow your market share, when your opposition goes out of business. Market! Market! Market!
Just be smart about it. That’s why I love the Internet. And why I love programs like Webexposure. Because it’s a nominal fee that attracts big results.
Another tip that Robert gave is to be patient with marketing. It takes at least 6 weeks for anything to happen. Maybe more.
The talk on Friday has got me thinking about the way I do business. I’ll be letting you know the progress I make.

I had dinner at Primi Piatti in Table View last night with two new friends. It was not just an opportunity to get to know each other, but also share our passions, dreams and visions.
Last night taught me two things:
- Actually speaking my dreams and passions allows me to solidify it in my head.
- Telling others about my dreams and passions holds me accountable to them.
The whole experience was exciting. I left the restaurant feeling pumped and ready to do more, achieve more, tackle more. Building each other up is so important!
In the United States they have “MIT Dinners”. The MIT stands for Millionaires in Training, and each group has AT LEAST one millionaire in it. The idea is simple: Get together once a month sharing dreams, strategies, visions, building each other up and encouraging others through the bad times.
I belong to a similar group in South Africa. We call it the Super8 team (I’ll talk about that another time), but the concept is the same.
The question is: Who are we hanging out with? Are the people we spend out time with building us up? Or breaking us down? Are we hanging around with Millionaires?
I got a ticket for tomorrow’s breakfast with Robert Kiyosaki and am rather excited about it! Watch this space!
