FIFA does it again …

When I see anything to do with marketing in the press I pay attention … mainly because marketing is my bread-and-butter. It’s yours too, if you haven’t figured that out yet.

FIFA is coming to South Africa in a few short weeks and the country is getting ready. Of course there are the opportunists out there who have hiked up their prices for ridiculous reasons. British Airways (my favourite airline) has more than tripled it’s rates during the World Cup.

And so, as a challenge, Kulula.com had been marketing itself as an airline that won’t abuse the situation. Of course, they had to be very careful about how they market themselves because FIFA has very strict rules for marketing (even for people who have nothing to do with the World Cup).

According to IOL.CO.ZA Kulula.com was forced to withdraw it’s advertising campaign for the use of words like “South Africa” and depicting a Vuvuzela and the Cape Town stadium.

Personally I find it distasteful that anyone can tell me how to market my business. As long as it’s ethical, moral and legal … I should be allowed to do it. What pains me is that FIFA has forced our democratically elected government to pass laws making kulula.com’s marketing illegal.

It smacks of thuggery. FIFA isn’t a World Sports Body … it’s now moved into the realm of Mafia-stype business.

What are your thoughts?

Windows 7 – I feel like a traitor

Yesterday I did something I never thought I’d ever do … I bought a new PC with Windows 7 on it, because my old Desktop of more than 7 years decided to die on me this morning thanks to a virus.

Since January 2007 I have been using Apple Mac. I am still using the original Macbook I bought back then and have never needed to format it. It has no anti-virus on it … it just works … beautifully. Since then I’ve added another 3 macs and two iPhones to my collection of Apple Products. It’s beautiful and I love it. The integration into my office is awesome.

There are, however, a few hitches:

1. Most importantly, my accounting software, Softline Pastel, does not support mac in any form. I need to have a windows enabled computer to run it. Now, I can run a dualboot option … or even a virtual machine on my macbook, but there’s a secondary problem:

2. None of my printers (I have 3) will work on my macbook. This is because I bought them all before I had any macs. Otherwise I would have bought a printer that supports OSX (most of them do now, anyway). As I upgrade the hardware, I’ll move things around a little.

Of course, having a PC can be useful. It serves as a data-server for the office and a print-server and when the accountant is here she can merrily hum along while playing on Pastel.

But then, yesterday, disaster struck. I got taken out by a trojan who installed some crappy software on my PC demanding $40 to uninstall itself. I have a business to run, and actually would have paid the $40 … if it wasn’t for the fact that it finally killed Milamber (the name of my PC).

So here I am … blogging on my new Windows 7 machine … I feel violated.

Reasonable uncapped DSL in South Africa?

So the big news this morning is that MWEB has released a whole heap of cheaper DSL products in South Africa – uncapped DSL for about R219 per month. Now that’s not bad at all.

I am a little concerned by some of the fineprint, which you can read about on mybroadband.co.za. I found a link where MWEB was giving out free accounts to the first 1000 people to test it out. I’ve qualified, so I’ll definitely keep you in the loop regarding this!

My concerns lie in the fact that if you’re limiting my usage then it’s really not broadband in the proper sense of the word.

For example, I’m not allowed to audio-stream my radio from Germany, not allowed to video-stream (TV from the UK, for example) and not allowed to do any excessive FTP’ing … I’m worried about those kinds of limitations. Who says they won’t throttle things to a point where it’s unusable.

Anyway, it’s absolutely all speculation … many ISP’s have the fineprint just to protect themselves against the odd abuser. I am, however, very excited to see the progress being made in South Africa’s internet community.
