Are you Mr Grumpy?

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I like things to go according to plan. Frankly, 2011 has not quite been doing what I’m trying to tell it to do. I’ve got heaps of great projects up in the air but everything seems to be going wrong. Until this morning when one of my staff told me he was simply fed-up with me being Mr Grumpy in the office and I have to “sort myself out”. Ouch. He then followed on by saying “if things are going wrong, the problem is with you.”

First I had to deal with the usual emotions … who does he think he is talking to me like that? I pay his salary! He should tow the line!

I then had to stop myself, because I knew he was right. I encourage truthfulness in my team, so I shouldn’t be shocked with the team call me out on my bad attitude. It may hurt (A LOT!) but I do need to hear the “eina-stories”.

Maybe you feel a little frustrated by your situation. The economy is bad, clients aren’t paying on time and money is tight. Maybe, like me, you feel like you’re banging your head against the wall.

In times like these, it helps me to focus on the words of Reinhold Niebuhr:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Let me make a suggestion; take 30 minutes out of your day RIGHT NOW and ask yourself: Am I really this person? Am I living and doing what I am meant to do, or am I banging aimlessly against a wall I have absolutely no control over?

Secondly, ask yourself: What am I in control of? What can I change? And what am I going to do about it?

If I am going to grow up to be someone in the league of Donald Trump or Robert Kiyosaki, I need to ask myself … how would they act? Do they walk around like Mr Grumpy in the office? Or do they control their emotions?

So, decision time: Are we going to take control over our actions?

I am on a complete buzz the entire weekend … because I got free coffee from Enrista. As part of their marketing campaign, they sent out free sample packs to a whole heap of people. As any of my friends and they’ll tell you that I am quite the Coffee Snob and it takes a lot to please me … well, I’m thoroughly pleased with their coffee.

Take a look at their website at www.enrista.co.za

Work from home or rent offices?

I work from home. I love the idea of never having to worry about getting up at 6am so I can be at the office by 8am. I can dress as relaxed as I like and I enjoy the fact that I can slip out down to the beach whenever I want to. It’s a fantastic feeling.

But over the last 6 months I have also realised that my business has reached a ceiling. Now I can either stay where I am and enjoy my little comfort zone, or make a decision and move into proper offices. Currently I have two staff which work for me, which means I need to be up and about (and dressed) and the house needs to be cleaned before they get here at 8am. So I’m up early anyway.

The problem is that the house just has too many distractions for us … too many opportunities to go check out the TV, or run to the beach, or pop down to a coffee shop and no matter how disciplined we try to be, it doesn’t work out.

So, I have decided that within the next 90 days I need to find offices for the company to move into – it’s not going to be too fancy, but I do want to give the team a better, more productive, working environment.

So what are your thoughts? Any suggestions?
