Dummies can make money online

I have just discovered that when it comes to using the Internet I can be a bit of a noob (new-bie) … I have just shocked a blogger by telling him that I don’t use RSS feeds nor do I know how it works.

OK, once he explained it to me I realised it’s actually very easy. My first reaction was that I am a complete idiot for not knowing how to use it. I mean I really felt stupid.

And then I realised that it was OK. The Internet is huge. Let’s be honest – things change so quickly. A year ago most people didn’t even know what twitter was. Now it’s the first thing I check every morning.

The reason why I felt I am OK is because unlike a lot of people I actually do make money online. And if I can do it then any n00b can do it. Heck, earning money online is easy.

Yay for n00bs.

P.S. If you have no idea what RSS is then you can take a look here.

You don’t need Paypal to succeed in life.

There has been a lot of speculation in South Africa lately about the (final) arrival of Paypal. For many years now South Africans could use paypal to SEND money, but were not able to use paypal to receive money. There were many reasons for this, most notably, the fact that South Africa still uses archaic exchange regulations and has a very tight-fisted Reserve Bank and Monetary Policy.

That’s more than enough material for another debate, but today I want to discuss my views on Paypal.

Many of the people I talk to say that they can’t make a success using the Internet because there is no access to Paypal for South Africans. I quickly point out that I very successfully use 2checkout.com which is perfectly legal (even for South Africans) and have seamlessly received money into my South African bank account through a basic SWIFT transfer. 2checkout.com also allows people to pay via their paypal accounts.

So why are people still harping on about paypal.com? I think that it’s simply an excuse… “I can’t make a success because…” After all the pain and integration and time it takes for FNB to set up paypal.com in South Africa I can see another string of excuses coming along about why the banks/reserve bank/government/universe is preventing people from succeeding.

You have to make the decision now: Are you going to play victim or not?

Technology – is it a curse?

I have just returned from a trip to Durban and Johannesburg. The Joburg trip was for business and the Durban trip – 3 days to chill out and forget about the world … but that didn’t happen.

Which makes me wonder … is technology just a curse? Maybe I should have left my laptop and cellphone behind but I simply could not relax while I was away. I was checking emails every 2 or 3 hours and the office numbers were diverted to my cellphone (stupid answering service wasn’t working and I didn’t want clients left wondering).

And then you get the clients who phone you and ask if they can speak to you … and you say “no, I’m actually occupied until Monday” and then they say “but this will only take a minute” and it doesn’t – it takes 30. And if you get persistent and near-rude with them they end up cancelling contracts because you’re not available when THEY need you (would be nice if they would PAY you when you need them to!)

So I have returned from my first REAL relax (only 3 days!) since 2001 … more stressed than when I left.

From tomorrow I am going to restructure my business a little – I’m going to be über-selective of my clients (maybe fire a few trouble makers).

But here’s my thought: if you’re going to run an online business … plan properly … or your clients think they have the right to disturb you 24/7/365 …

Technology can be a real blessing … but at the moment … it’s a curse!
